Vodafone claims Egypt sent propaganda using its network

updated 02:25 pm EST, Thu February 3, 2011

Vodafone it was used by Egypt to send propaganda

Carrier Vodafone let it be known on Thursday that the Egyptian government used its network to send out messages to the population in Egypt during the recent conflict. Two of the translated messages read "The Armed Forces cares for your safety and well being and will not resort to using force against this great nation," and "The Armed Forces asks Egypt's honest and loyal men to confront the traitors and criminals and protect our people and honor and our precious Egypt." Vodafone said the government was able to do this under the emergency powers provisions in the Telecoms Act.

The carrier said it protested the content of these messages and wanted them to be clearly signed by the originator, as to not confuse those who received them. It also said such use of its network was unacceptable, but was required to abide under the Egyptian law. Vodafone networks were still partially shut down early on Thursday.

The Egyptian authorities also shut down Internet access in the country, with BlackBerry service being the first, followed by landline and other cellular access, including text messaging. [via Forbes]
