Motorola Atrix to hit AT&T on March 6 with notebook bundle

updated 12:10 pm EST, Thu February 3, 2011

Motorola Atrix 4G officially due March 6

AT&T on Thursday at last committed to a launch for the Motorola Atrix 4G. The dual-core Android flagship will reach its stores on March 6 with pre-orders starting on February 13. The phone will cost the standard $200 on contract but, in an unusual turn, can come bundled with its unique notebook dock for $500.

The notebook is said to cost $500 if bought by itself, off-contract. A special Entertainment Access Kit will carry the HDMI dock, a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard combo, and a remote control for $190.

The Atrix 4G is the first phone using NVIDIA's Tegra 2 to ship and will eventually record 1080p video as well as play it out over HDMI or the four-inch, 960x540 display. While other Tegra 2 phones are are shipping, it should be one of the first smartphones with a full 1GB of RAM. Both a five-megapixel back camera and a front VGA camera give it support for live streaming, as does its namesake HSPA+ cell data.

The device's signature move is docking support. On a standard HDMI dock or its notebook dock, it can generate a full windowed interface known as Webtop that provides a much more desktop-like experience. The HDMI dock relies on USB peripherals and a third-party screen where the notebook dock has a full keyboard, trackpad and 11.6-inch display.
