Murdoch: The Daily will come to 'all major tablets' in time

updated 12:10 pm EST, Wed February 2, 2011

Murdoch vows The Daily for more than iPad soon

Rupert Murdoch during his introduction event for The Daily promised that the publication wouldn't be exclusive to the iPad in the long run. News Corp was "quite honest with Apple" and stressed that the daily publication would come to "all major tablets" at a certain point. He didn't confirm that it was an exclusive, but he characterized Apple as virtually controlling the tablet market for the near future.

"We believe that last year, this year and maybe next year belong to Apple," the media tycoon said.

The company's Jon Miller added that the focus was on how good a product could be made for the iPad at the moment. Executives noted that Apple was continuing to help out even past the introduction of in-app iTunes subscriptions.

The revelation makes it likely that Android 3.0 tablets will get The Daily as the next major platform, but the BlackBerry PlayBook and HP's webOS are two other major candidates.

Murdoch's remarks are an expression of confidence in the iPad and mirror those of analyst predictions, which have Apple keeping its lead until at least 2012. Most Android 3.0 tablets won't ship until mid-2011 and will have considerably fewer apps or ecosystem support at first. Apple Internet Services VP Eddy Cue note that there were over 9,000 news apps on the iPad in just a year and that they'd been downloaded over 200 million times.
