AT&T hotspot plan ready February 13, packs 2GB extra data

ATT mobile hotspot due Feb 13 with 2GB more data

AT&T today updated its tethering plan in advance of the new hotspot plan coming first with the HTC Inspire 4G's arrival on February 13. The updated hotspot/tethering plan will offer an extra 2GB of monthly data, regardless of how it's used or how many devices are attached and comes without changing the $45 combined price of getting a tethering-ready data plan.

Overage will still cost $10 for every extra gigabyte over newly expanded cap.

The carrier when asked by Electronista also declined to say whether any other devices would get hotspot support at the same time, including the iPhone. It had previously said it was 'evaluating' iPhone hotspot support but hadn't committed at the time. Other Android devices are unofficially expected to get the feature soon.

Along with the sharing, AT&T said it was starting a trade-in service on the same day. The FlipSwap-run strategy would let users exchange an old phone for its estimated money equivalent in an AT&T card. The strategy is independent of the carrier or the phone make.

Trade-in plans such as these typically give less money than through independent services such as Gazelle but usually count on the immediacy of the cash back as an incentive. Verizon already started a program in September, but the program took on added relevance for AT&T when Verizon began offering AT&T iPhone trade-in discounts last month.

Verizon also recently brought in its own tethering and hotspot plan, though its plan is matched with unlimited on-device data and applies a cap only to the tethering mode.

    Clarification, please...

Both the hotspot and tethering will carry an extra 2GB of data on the same day...

Does that mean I get 2GB every day instead of every month with this plan? 4GB per day? 4GB per month? 2GB tethering/hotspot per day, plus 2GB non-tethered/non-hotspot per month?

For some reason, that wording has me confused on the data cap and whether it's a day limit or a monthly limit. K.I.S.S., AT&T... K.I.S.S., for the love of all that is good and holy.

Does this work on real phones or is it just for the Huge Tub of c*** (HTC)?
