Zyxel puts out pocketable 3G router

updated 08:00 am EST, Tue February 1, 2011

Zyxel MWR211 brings handheld 3G routing

Zyxel this morning gave fresh competition to the MiFi with the MWR211. The pocket 3G router is a carrier-independent option and should share most any USB modem over 802.11n Wi-Fi. Compared to its Novatel-made counterpart, however, the maximum number of users is uncapped and limited only the 3G connection.

The device has an Ethernet port to take in a wired Internet source if necessary and will even send bandwidth alerts of its own to warn users when they get close to a carrier's cap. A full stateful packet inspection firewall keeps it safeguarded. Zyxel hasn't given out battery life estimates.

MWR211 routers should be available today for a $115 official price, although it has already been spotted for $85 street price. An extra MWR222 version has an extra Ethernet jack for sharing the connection with another wired device.
