Panasonic prices, dates GF2 and kits for the US

Panasonic Lumix GF2 to hit US for 500

Panasonic today committed itself to pricing and ship dates for the Lumix GF2. Its smallest Micro Four Thirds camera will sell for $500 in body-only form, $600 for a kit with the 14-42mm lens and $700 for a version with the 14mm f2.5 pancake lens. The 12.5mm, f12 3D lens will be available by itself for $250.

The camera is up for sale at Amazon and should sell in all the same colors as available elsewhere, including conservative black and silver hues as well as red and white. Existing Panasonic lenses such as its 20mm pancake and 14-140mm telephoto should still work unchanged.

All of the variants will be in stores mid-February.

We tried the GF2 at CES this year and found that it still had enough control to please either dedicated hobbyists or pros using it as a sidearm for when a full DSLR is too big. We're concerned that the touchscreen interface may be daunting at first, but most common tasks have top-level access even with the reduced hardware buttons. The size is its most impressive trait as it's smaller than many prosumer cameras before the lens is factored in.

    Smartest Move

The smartest thing that Panasonic ever did was team up with Leica for their glass (and vice-versa for Panasonic's electronic expertise). This effectively allowed a company with no respectable history in the manufacture of cameras or lenses to effectively leap-frog the pack, with highly desirable results!
