Microsoft confirms Yahoo mail behind Windows Phone 7 flaw

Microsoft backs Yahoo mail as cause of WP7 bug

Microsoft today in an official response acknowledged that Yahoo mail was at fault for the phantom 3G data bug plaguing Windows Phone 7 users. Confirming what had been discovered mentioned that an "inefficiency" exists when syncing mail, it said it was working with Yahoo and had identified a fix it expected in the next few weeks. The OS maker repeated Rafael Rivera's temporary workarounds and suggested checking Yahoo mail only manually.

The company was also forthcoming and admitted to a second bug with syncing e-mail through Exchange, including through Gmail when set up to use Microsoft's standard. Messages too big for the outcoming mail server or which are sent to a non-existent address will get trapped in the outbox. Its only short term fix was to delete these messages, but a "near-term end user update" would patch the problem.

It's unclear why Microsoft only decided to identify the problem after it was discovered by an outsider. The company had identified the cause two weeks ago but refused to identify the root cause right away or offer a stopgap like that suggested on Tuesday. Without a fix, some have risked overages or more drastic steps such as turning off all cellular data. [via Windows Phone Secrets]
