HTC Inspire 4G hits AT&T February 13 for $100 with hotspot

updated 10:40 am EST, Tue February 1, 2011

HTC Inspire 4G priced and dated for ATT

AT&T today confirmed launch details for the first of its '4G' phones introduced at CES, the HTC Inspire 4G. Its adaptation of the Desire HD will ship on February 13 and will have an unusually low $100 contract price. It should also be the first AT&T device to ship with mobile hotspot support and can share its connection over Wi-Fi for an extra $20 per month.

The smartphone's primary change from the Desire HD is a switch to AT&T-native 3G, which is hardware-limited to 14.4Mbps but still twice as fast as earlier phones on the network. Its 4.3-inch, 800x480 display, eight-megapixel camera and 720p video capture are the same. HTC Sense is now current and gives the option of a Find My iPhone-style remote phone tracker as well as some basic cloud syncing and social networking streams. AT&T bundles in an 8GB microSDHC card on top of the 4GB built in by HTC.

We tried the phone at CES, and while HTC wouldn't turn the device on, we could tell that all the vices and virtues of the Desire HD remain. It's well built and (if like the foreign model) fast, but some might take issue with its size and that it's still shipping with a single core processor and Android 2.2 in 2011. Those who aren't locked into AT&T might also want to consider the Thunderbolt, which uses real 4G and is at least theoretically faster online.
