Android 2.3 ported to x86 for netbooks, ViewPad

Android 2.3 gets port for x86 netbooks, tablets

Google's Android 2.3, has now been ported by Android-x86.org for use on Intel x86-based netbooks and some other mobile tablets. While the work is still in progress, the currently available software allows sound and Wi-Fi, though the Ethernet connection, 3D capabilities and mouse control are under development. A 64-bit build environment and Java 1.6 are needed to compile the OS.

A more stable Froyo (Android 2.2) build is also available for generic x86 devices, the Eee PC range from ASUS, some ASUS full-size notebooks, ViewSonic's ViewPad 10 and the Dell Inspiron Mini Duo. An unstable version is out for the Viliv S5 and virtual machine software such as virtual box, qemu and VMware.

The Android-x86.org team will also eventually tackle adding support for an external monitor, improving power management, adding multi-touch support and testing out default apps. [via AndroidCommunity and NotebookItalia]
