Samsung Galaxy Ace, Fit, Gio and Mini

Samsung this morning rolled out four mid- and low-range Android phones to target a field it has largely left untouched for over a year. It confirmed the Galaxy Ace and cast it as relatively fast, with an 800MHz processor to drive its 3.5-inch, 480x320 display. A five-megapixel camera, GPS and Wi-Fi fill out the hardware; it and the other phones all carry Android 2.2 along with Swype to speed up the on-screen keyboard.

The Galaxy Gio, named after the Italian for "jewel," is the next step and has a 3.2-inch screen at the same resolution as the Ace. The Fit is aimed at the budget realm with a 3.3-inch, QVGA (likely 400x240) screen and a 600MHz processor but the same five-megapixel camera. At the frugal end, the Mini is a consciously designed parallel to the LG Optimus One series and uses a 3.1-inch QVGA screen to target "smartphone rookies."

Samsung hasn't detailed any North American launches but plans a global launch. Russia gets them first and already has both the Ace and Mini today, with the Fit arriving in February and the Gio sometime later. China, Europe, India and South America have already been identified and will get their launches after Russia.
