New iPad TV ad claims over 60,000 dedicated iPad apps

updated 04:05 pm EST, Wed January 26, 2011

Gap still wide with iPhone titles

Apple has begun airing another new TV spot for the iPad, dubbed "iPad is Iconic." The ad showcases a variety of apps, including Djay, the Wall Street Journal and Vanity Fair, as well as common Apple marketing staples Pages and iBooks. Unlike some iPad ads, no common theme unites the apps on display.

Significantly the spot reveals that there are now over 60,000 native iPad titles in the App Store. Apple only periodically announces such milestones, typically during press events for iTunes- and iOS-related products. A significant gap still exists between the number of iPad apps and those compatible with the iPhone or iPod touch; at last count the latter category included over 300,000 titles.
