RIM: PlayBook battery life "equal to or greater than" iPad

updated 11:10 pm EST, Mon January 24, 2011

Company still won't disclose specifics

Research In Motion has continued to defend the BlackBerry PlayBook against doubts over the tablet's battery life. In an interview with Reuters, RIM's senior vice president for business and platform marketing, Jeff McDowell, claimed the tablet will sustain battery life "equal or greater than the iPad with smaller battery size."

McDowell suggests analysts' skepticism regarding the battery life is baseless, however the company has yet to disclose any specific figures with hour estimates for various tasks. Another RIM executive several weeks ago suggested the company is aiming for a "full day" of use, which is estimated at eight hours.

The iPad is said to achieve 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi, watching video or listening to music, with just an hour drop when browsing via 3G networks. RIM's reluctance to pin down an official figure has been viewed as an indication that the PlayBook's battery will not match the iPad's longevity, however.

Aside from the battery comments, McDowell also noted that the PlayBook will be compatible with 4,000 third-party apps by the March launch.

    LOL

The plaguebook has already failed. Everyone but RIM knows that already. But shhhh, don't let them know. It's more fun to watch them learn the millions of $$ loss a day way :D

    RIM forget...

Since they've tied the tablet to their BlackBerry devices, clearly they will lose some functionality not only when the tablet battery runs out, but when the BlackBerry battery runs out. Aren't they also pushing use of Flash for video? I'd like to see them get ten hours of that on their device!

Never Confuse Research In Motion ...

... with research in action. Unless you mean research inaction.

    To be honest...

I actually can't wait to see this thing, just to see how much of his incessant yapping turns out to be wrong.

    I might want one.

And the 7" size could be just about right. But not as a tablet. As a face for my car stereo. The iPad is great, but just a little too large.

If I can do navigation, listen to music and get on the internet when I need to, it'll be exactly what I need.

    just one more thing...

All those 4000 compatible 'apps'...are just web pages.

Actual native apps, like what the iPad has: maybe a few dozen, all from RIM
