Charter lands deal for TiVo interface on set-top boxes

updated 10:30 am EST, Mon January 24, 2011

Chater teams with TiVo to bring its set top boxes

Cable and telecommunications provider Charter Communications and TiVo kicked off the week with an announcement that they will cooperate on bringing TiVo's interface to Charter's set-tops. The hybrid platform will bring with it IP technologies in addition to the standard cable experience, and include both TiVo's newer HD user interface and TiVo Premiere boxes. Future TiVo platforms will also be used, adding new services and third-party apps.

Through this deal, Charter subsribers will have video on demand, Internet video and other IP-based apps. The first products will be capable of showing local news, sports and weather info in addition to Facebook and Twitter access, just like the standard TiVo interface. The OnDemand feature will let users choose from the more than 900 HD titles in Charter's library. The DVR will also allow for up to 45 hours of HD program storage.

The new products and services will launch in Charter markets later this year.

    TiVo?

TiVo was a great product when it launched back in '99 but the product line has not really been refreshed. For instance, their UI has pretty much stayed the same over this last decade. Glad to see they're around, though, as the original product was great. But that's why I love working for and subscribing to DISH Network. They're constantly adding new products and updating their services (placeshifting/TV Everywhere, advanced award winning HD DVR receivers) and the prices are amazingly low.
