Nuance opens up Dragon speech SDK for Android, iOS apps

updated 02:45 pm EST, Sun January 23, 2011

Nuance Dragon speech SDK open to 3rd-party apps

Nuance late this past week posted the Dragon translation apps. The kit allows incorporating the engine into third-party apps on either Android or iOS devices. Features work in both directions and will convert text to speech in as many as 35 languages, or speech to text in eight languages.

The SDK is free to use and isn't immediately known to have any royalty fees when attached to paid apps. Nuance hasn't said whether it will bring the SDK to the BlackBerry, Symbian, webOS or other platforms. [via Mashable]

    Yes, there is a fee

Unfortunately, Nuance is charging a fee every time a developer's customer uses the speech-to-text conversion feature. I was planning on using it for short 2-3 word commands, but I'll have to pay Nuance 2 cents every time one of my customers uses it. That's a deal-killer.

Nuance, this was a great idea, and you have a great product, but the "charge per use" is going to kill your potential SDK market.

Allow us developers to license the use of your SDK for unlimited use by our own customers, and you'll probably get lots of business -- including mine (as well as faster and deeper market penetration of your SDK).
