NAVV expands GPS navigation app to North America

updated 03:25 am EST, Fri January 21, 2011

Using NAVTEQ maps, offers low-cost turn-by-turn

Netherlands-based Appstores BV is launching versions of their successful European navigation app NAVV for all of North America, creating editions for the US, Canada and Mexico. The program features wholly on-board NAVTEQ maps -- which makes for a very large app -- and thus does not require extra data (3G or Wi-Fi) to operate. NAVV features voice instructions, turn-by-turn navigation, speeding alerts and 3D landmarks, while costing less than most competing GPS apps.

In addition to North America, NAVV is also available for Argentina, Chile, most European countries, South Africa, India, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore -- a total of 54 countries and territories. The US edition includes all 50 states and Puerto Rico and sells for $25. The app weighs in at 1.6GB, which could be an issue for users with smaller-capacity iPhones. The also includes standard GPS features like multiple waypoints, a compass, points of interest that are filterable or customizable by the user, geo coordinates and more.

The app requires iOS 3.0 or higher and a GPS-capable iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

    Do not like

The subdued tones. It's a NAVIGATION app that you get to GLANCE at. We need high-contrast, not pastels.
