Apple reports another stellar quarter
In yet another stellar quarter for Apple, the company has reported a surge in shipments for nearly all of its product categories. In the first fiscal quarter of 2011, Mac sales were up by 23 percent from the same period last year and six percent higher than the previous quarter. Performance was mostly driven by MacBook sales, as the desktop Mac lineup showed a slight drop of one percent.
Tablet buyers have continued to push iPad sales higher, with unit numbers climbing to 7.3 million and jumping by 75 percent compared to the previous quarter. The iPhone also continued to show gains, with shipments rising 15 percent from the previous quarter and 86 percent from the same period of the previous year.
As expected, the iPod segment continues to show a yearly drop in unit numbers. The company managed to increase iPod revenues by one percent, however, despite a seven percent drop in overall sales compared to the same quarter in the previous year.
Across all product categories, Apple reported a 71 percent jump in revenue -- pushing past $20 billion -- compared to its first fiscal quarter of 2010.
