Rumor reiterates claim PSP2 as fast as PS3

PSP2 to be as fast as a PS3 console, says Sony

A new report from MCVUK maintains Sony has told licensees the upcoming PSP2 is "as powerful as the PlayStation3." The statement is significant, as the home gaming consoles sports seven SPE processors running at 3.2GHz and 256MB of main RAM and 256MB of VRAM. It does line up with an earlier report, however, that pegged the hardware of the portable console at 1GB of RAM and claimed performance would match that of the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.

How this would be accomplished is not known, as the fastest currently available mobile chip is NVIDIA's dual-core, 1GHz Tegra 2. All the components on the PSP2 are much newer and more densely packed than in a PS3 system, however, so this may account for much of the claimed performance. The PSP2 will also likely use flash memory exclusively for storage rather than a spinning hard drive, which will translate into faster load times and reduced bottlenecks.

The new PSP should arrive in the fall and will sport an HD display with dual analog sticks. Games publishers were already consulted regarding the release dates of the first line of games for the consoles. To help it stand out from devices such as Apple's iPod and iPad, the games will be more in-depth.
After an initial launch event, purportedly scheduled for January 27, Sony is expecting to share more info at the GDC and E3 game shows.
