Gartner: Apple market share surges as overall PC sales slide

updated 06:55 pm EST, Wed January 12, 2011

Holiday PC sales weak in many areas

Apple's market share among computer makers in the US has continued to surge, despite an overall decline in PC sales, according to data collected by research firm Gartner. Mac shipments climbed by 23.7 percent to reach 1.86 million units, bringing Apple's market share up to 9.7 percent in the US.

Apple is now closing the gap with competitor Toshiba, which was the only other company with positive growth in the US market. Mac sales in the fourth quarter of 2009 were approximately half of Acer's PC shipments, however Apple would have jumped from the fifth to the third position to beat Acer with just 260,000 additional units in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Although the PC numbers were not compared with tablets such as the iPad, Gartner analyst Mikako Kitagawa suggests the new devices are proving much more popular than netbooks.

"Media tablets undoubtedly intensified the competition in the consumer market," Kitagawa said. "These devices do not replace primary PCs, but they are viewed as good enough devices for these who want to have a second and third connected device for content consumption usage."

This could kill off WIndows Phone 7

Ballmer is so terrified of anything affecting Windows 7 sales that he secretly wants non-Windows and non-Office projects to fail at Microsoft. And losing billions on Bing, Zune, Xbox (barely running at break-even now), WIndows CE / UMPC / Pocket PC / Windows Mobile probably did nothing to cheer him up.

Pee cee sales sliding? Better kill Windows Phone 7 before it takes off and slashes more Windows sales. Ballmer has effectively killed off WIndows slates already, and the ARM version of Windows 8 won't be ready for two years.

Maybe Microsoft should have stuck with DOS 5.0. It would have run pretty fast on ARM.
