Apple to roll out new Bumpers for Verizon iPhone

updated 04:00 pm EST, Tue January 11, 2011

Company mum on details

Apple will sell a new set of Bumper cases to match the Verizon iPhone, a company spokesperson has reportedly confirmed. The series will represent just a minor revision, rather than an aesthetic overhaul. The spokesperson has not elaborated on when the new Bumpers might ship, although the phone itself is due on February 10th.

The tweak is necessary to accommodate different button placements on the new iPhone, which are a few millimeters off. These in turn are a result of a redesigned antenna band, intended to serve the switch from a GSM-based radio to one using CDMA. The new phone is otherwise virtually unchanged.

    Different volume and silence buttons...

With the change to the antenna band, the volume buttons needed to be moved down the side toward the speakers a bit, and the silence switch is smaller/shorter than the AT&T version.

    Wait...

So Apple can make two completely different iPhones with two different cases and layouts that require different third-party support, but when someone asks for something small, like "How about the option for this or that" on a Mac, we're told they can't do it, because, oh man, they'd have to build two types of cases or something.
