News Corp's iPad daily should go live January 19

News Corp iPad pub may be locked for January 19

News Corp's iPad news magazine The Daily should be made public on January 19, a company contact said Tuesday. It had already been narrowed down to that week but now had a specific day. Forbes noted that a teaser page had already gone live and confirmed that it was getting close.

Staff have reportedly been producing full test issues for "weeks" to make sure the initial launch is smooth.

Most of The Daily's details are already known through both public comments and unofficial leaks. The initially iPad-only content will cost 99 cents per week and include multiple updates per day that will bring videos and other mixed-media articles. It may involve a special 3D element to the interface as well.

Staff would mostly be dedicated but should include resources from some of News Corp's other media outlets, such as the New York Post.

The project exists mostly as the brainchild of News Corp. head Rupert Murdoch, who has considered tablets the savior of publishing. He has often criticized the move to the free, ad-supported web and sees the iPad or other tablets as a means of turning back the clock to encourage paid subscriptions. Tablets let publications keep their traditional print layout investments and a familiar book-like format but get the cheaper distribution and more advanced media features of the modern era.

    Re: ....

News corp does not publish 'rags'. They are the only corporation out there willing to be completely objective. h***, look at Fox News. You can get opinions from various folks from all over the spectrum. Everywhere from the right to the far-right. There's no ideological slant there!
