Lacks some features of iOS versions at present
The previously-available Kindle app for Mac is also available on the Mac App Store, enabling many users to discover it despite its having been out since March. The free application syncs Kindle purchases across Amazon's hardware e-reader, the iPhone and iPad versions of the app as well as the Mac, allowing readers to move seamlessly from device to device while keeping the same library available on all, right down to the last page read, notes and highlights in each book.
The Mac version of the app does have some minor limitations compared to other editions -- including a lack of text-to-speech options, no animated page turning and no built-in dictionary to define words as is found on the iOS version -- but has generally been well-received, earning a rating of 4.5 stars out of five from 77 reviewers, mostly on the strength of its syncing technology and the resulting convenience.
The Kindle app offers access to over 775,000 e-books, along with the usual assortment of public-domain classics and free samples from paid books. It requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later.
