Windows Phone 7 news update: some good news, some bad news

updated 01:30 am EST, Sun January 9, 2011

App uptake good, but data usage issues appear

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 garnered some air time during Microsoft's CES 2011 Keynote, but it was largely drowned out by the buzz surrounding numerous Android 2.3 phone launches. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made a reference to the positive reaction that its new mobile OS has received and said that it was off to a great start. Adding to the good news, Aaron Woodman, director of the mobile communications business at Microsoft has said in an interview with Seattle Times that more than half of the new WP7 user base is downloading an app per day.

During the interview, Woodman also noted that AT&T customer satisfaction ratings for their WP7 phones was high, with 9 out 10 users saying that they would recommend WP7 to someone else. Woodman said that this was positive news and that its long-term focus is to drive volume business. One strategy it hopes will do this is by enhancing its windowsphone.live.com cloud-based service by adding some of the positively received KIN Studio features to it.

However, in some bad news for Windows Phone 7 users, it appears that there is a bug that is causing their devices to upload large packets of data without user permission or knowledge eating into their monthly data allowances. Julie G writes to Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows to say that, "I...looked at my AT&T account online and noticed that my phone was sending huge chunks of data [between 30-50MB] seemingly in patterns." According to Thurrott, it is a curiously common problem and is "sort of shocked that Microsoft hasn't addressed it publicly yet, either to confirm it or to offer a fix."
