Hands-on with LG's 4G-capable Revolution

We test LG Revolution at Verizon event

One of the more anticipated phones from Verizon's 4G event was the LG Revolution. It represents even more of a departure for LG with a giant 4.3-inch screen and much more aggressive technology adoption than seen in the past. Read through for our hands-on to see how well it fared compared to its fellow LTE peers.

Apart from the size, the Revolution is actually a close cousin of the Optimus 2X and Black and, though not stated, is likely to use the same NVIDIA Tegra 2 that powers its siblings. That bore out in our experience with performance: it was very fast in some visual areas but occasionally bogged don in transitions that pointed to either Android 2.2 lacking enough interface acceleration or else the Tegra 2 not being as fast as its dual 1GHz speeds would suggest.

LTE downloads are, as expected, fast. What was true of phones like the HTC Thunderbolt remained true with the Revolution; it was only slightly slower than a good Wi-Fi connection. We didn't have the option of using 4G much beyond browsing, but we did see V Cast TV streaming in HD without problems.

In the hand, the phone is comfortable and slightly easier to hold than the Thunderbolt, although still decidedly larger. As the manufacturer of the iPhone 4's Retina Display, it's not surprising that the LCD is bright and vivid; it likely uses the same technology behind the Nova display on the Black. We didn't have the opportunity to try HDMI playback, Skype Mobile or video chat, however.

As with the other LTE devices from the launch, the Revolution doesn't yet have a ship date or a price. It should be ready in the first half of the year.
