Verizon to hold special NYC event January 11, iPhone likely

Verizon sends January 11 invite, iPhone possible

(Update: iPhone very likely) Verizon today sent an invitation to members of the press for a special event in New York City on January 11. It didn't detail what would occur, but it would be hosted by none other than Verizon President Lowell McAdam. The event was unusually timed as it would follow just two days after CES ends.

As the company just unveiled its 4G Android lineup, the news may ultimately relate to the long rumored CDMA iPhone. Verizon was already rumored to be adding the Apple smartphone just after CES, and Apple may have blacked out vacations for February 3 through 6 to coordinate the release at its own stores.

The phone may be cosmetically different but should be functionally similar to the GSM version other than the network switch. LTE 4G isn't likely as the chipsets demand more battery and physical space than 3G.

Update: A scoop this afternoon from AllThingsD sources said that the news would in fact be about the iPhone.

    Nice work!

Good thing you didn't post it up on the internet for all to see like the invite requests. :/

    Betting this is 4G LTE

I think it would be kinda ridiculous to have such a big Verizon event for a 3g iPhone when they are clearly pushing the heck out of their 4G LTE network.

I'm betting the phone will be 4G.

I hate Verizon because of their predatory business practices.

I'm hoping Apple doesn't let them cripple the phone in any way (like Verizon used to do).

The Allen Room would be perfect

It'll be cool if Verizon can get the Allen Room at that location - the huge floor-to-ceiling glass facade looking out onto Manhattan's Central Park and Columbus Circle would sort of mimic Apple's 5th Ave. cube store and would blow away any location. But then again so much outdoor lighting would probably be problematic.

    Only three more days!

... for the faithful members of the church of GSM [*cough* facebook_Justin *cough*] to insist that the iPhone will NEVER come to Verizon and its CDMA network.

Wanna get in one last shot before the Verizon iPhone gets announced?

    It won't be LTE

Verizon will be thrilled to have a 3G CDMA iPhone on their network, and Apple is pretty conservative about hardware (as in, they want it to really work 100%, not just to be able to tick the box next to another buzzword). Apple's never been about offering the most features, rather more about offering the best experience.

LTE will be great, in a few years. As it is now, it's just beginning to work, in a few areas. Remember, Apple wants a Verizon iPhone because they want the iPhone to work/be available everywhere (otherwise, they could just stick to GSM until LTE is 100% rolled out). Keep in mind that Apple released the original iPhone as EDGE-only, although 3G networks were somewhat available, because the 3G chips at the time sucked up too much power, which translates to too-short battery life. Again, quality of experience trumps buzzwords.

Selling on multiple carriers is a good thing for Apple, because with Apple keeping a lock on the phone prices, the carriers will have to compete on monthly service plans/prices and customer service reputation. This feeds back into that "offer the best experience" thing, and benefits customers (yay!), who, in turn, will buy more iPhones, making Apple happy.
