Mac App Store downloads exceed 1 million

updated 10:20 am EST, Fri January 7, 2011

Service dwarfed by original App Store

Downloads from the Mac App Store have already exceeded 1 million in the space of a day, Apple says. "We're amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting," reads a prepared statement from CEO Steve Jobs. "Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are loving how easy and fun the Mac App Store is."

The Mac App Store remains extremely small in terms of selection next to its iOS counterpart. Whereas the latter has closer to 400,000 apps, only a little over 1,000 titles are currently listed for Macs. Mac software is however more complex and expensive as a rule, factors also believed to be keeping iPad apps to a relatively small portion of App Store titles.

A small revenue stream is better than none at all.

Once the developers start feeling comfortable with it, look for a flood of apps and games on OSX platform. It should be very convenient for Mac users. I'm curious how well something like this would work on the enterprise level for keeping desktop clients up to date.

    Really?

"The Mac App Store remains extremely small in terms of selection next to its iOS counterpart."

    It's only been 1 day.

    Geez what a stupid statement.

    I was wondering until yesterday...

...what the "big difference" between apps through the App Store and regular, standard Mac apps were... and it seems there really isn't any at all, save for the distribution method.

They're still, for the most part, .app packages, installed in /Applications, and automatically added to the Dock.

I really can't buy into everyone's concerns over the App Store at this point in time: I can't see Apple going solely with this method of app distribution, because, well, I can't see Apple being able to shut out developers wanting to distribute apps themselves unless they completely lock the Applications folder from being written to completely (doubtful!). I can't submit to the concern over app pricing, either, as it seems like apps through the App Store are being offered everywhere from a dollar up to $50 or more. I can't submit to the concern over app quality, either, as crappy apps have always existed for the Mac, and you don't develop for the App Store any different than you would a standalone app (you still use XCode, etc.). Crappy apps existed before the App Store, they'll exist in the App Store, and they'll exist outside the App Store as well.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the App Store experience. It's just the same as it's always been, just "better" and easier to find apps now.

    Time will tell.

    yawn

Most of which were people going "OK, let me go grab some app to see what all the fuss was about!". The proof is in the long-term, not in the first-day.

h***, Apple also reported an incredible surge of people signing up for Ping on the first day too.

I upgraded iLife via the mac store

It was cheaper than the box version and I could have picked which apps I wanted to upgrade.

I also bought Pixelmator on the App store. I had originally purchased it in 2007 but with the low price and a promise of a free upgrade to 2.x, I decided to support their company.
