Samsung brings out HDTVs with ultra-thin bezels

Samsung showed off new HDTVs at CES, including sixteen new plasma models. Chief among the new features is a new one-inch Plasma+1 design that adds one inch of viewable screen size compared to 2010 models without bumping up the overall size of the sets. Some of the higher-end models include Samsung`s Smart Hub feature that lets users perform searches for content on their TVs and connected, DLNA-certified media storage devices. Video recommendations, called Your Video, will be sent to users based on their viewing histories.

Browsing the web is also possible from the TV and users can download apps from Samsung's store. Samsung was the first to bring apps to HDTVs, and operates an open-source development community for a choice of apps. Both paid and free apps are offered.

The highlights of the new models are the LED D8000 and Plasma D8000 as well as the LED D7000, D6400 and Plasma D6500-series. All are available in various sizes. The plasma D8000 has a dynamic contrast ratio of 3,000,000:1 and can be used with Samsung`s new 3D active shutter glasses and multi-display Touch Control that lets viewers watch TV on the remote's own LCD display.

The sets are 3D compatible and have Wi-Fi built-in. They also get DLNA certification and can support other Samsung AllShare devices.

The D8000s have a 0.2-inch brushed metal bezel, 240Hz panels and 2ms response times. It also has 2D to 3D conversion. The Innovative Touch Control lets users watch TV programs on its 3-inch LCD screen without the need for the large TV to be on.

The D6400 series has a 120Hz LED panel.

Samsung did not reveal ship dates or prices for these TV sets.
