Canon PowerShot A-series cameras get 720p video

updated 12:30 pm EST, Wed January 5, 2011

Intros budget model and three with HD video

Canon announced three additions to its compact Powershot A-series cameras capable of shooting 720p HD video: the A3300 IS, A2200, and A1200 digital cameras. The new cameras offer 32 presets for different lighting and shooting situations and a blur reduction feature. A new Discreet mode turns off the auto-focus assist beam, sound, and flash, for taking pictures when those features would be a distraction. For those consumers new to digital photography, the cameras come with an easy-to-use interface for adjusting brightness, vividness and color tone.

Another feature designed to aid newcomers and conserve battery power is the Optical View Finder found in the PowerShot A1200 model. The A1200 also includes Canon's mode dial for ease of use.

Like others in the A series, the A3300 IS, A2200, and A1200 models have special filter effects and include two new options, Toy Camera and Monochrome mode. The Toy Camera effect gives a grainier look to simulate older photographs, and Monochrome mode renders images in black-and-white, blue or sepia tones for an antique look.

The PowerShot A3300 IS features a 16.0-Megapixel CCD sensor, Optical Image Stabilizer, and 3.0-inch LCD screen. It has 5x Optical Zoom and a wide angle, 28-140mm equivalent lens. It will be available in grey, red, blue, silver and pink.

The PowerShot A2200 has a 14.1-Megapixel CCD sensor, a 2.7-inch LCD screen, 4x optical zoom, and a wide angle, 28-112mm equivalent lens. It will come in black, blue, silver and red.

The A1200 includes a 12.1-Megapixel CCD sensor, a 2.7-inch LCD screen, 4x Optical Zoom, and a wide angle 28-112mm equivalent lens. It is AA battery-powered and will be available in both black and silver.

An entry-level model, the A800, is a 10-megapixel CCD camera that does not take video. The A800 has 3.3x optical zoom and a 2.5-inch LCD screen. It has 19 image presets and is AA battery-powered.

The PowerShot A3300 IS and A800 are scheduled to be available in February. The A3300 will sell for an estimated $180, while the A800 will retail for $90.

The PowerShot A2200 and A1200 are scheduled to be available in early March. Anticipated retail price for the A2200 is $140. Estimated price for the A1200 is $110.
