VUDU set to deliver streaming 3D movie content next week

updated 05:20 am EST, Wed January 5, 2011

First to offer 3D movies via the net

VUDU has used CES as the platform to announce that it will be the first online movie rental service to offer streaming 3D movies starting next week. Connected 3D HDTVs, 3D Blu-ray players and entertainment systems from LG, Mitsubishi, Philips, Playstation 3, Samsung, Funai, Toshiba, Vizio and those that support Boxee media software will all be compatible with the new service. When streaming to a connected entertainment system, users will also require a 3D capable TV in order to be able to view the content.

VUDU believes that its new service will help to rekindle interest in 3D content, especially for users who already own 3D TVs but fail to utilize them because of a perceived lack of content.

VUDU's 3D title selection will be automatically available on any device that is enabled for VUDU 3D, with no additional software download required. 3D titles will be available at all three resolutions, SD (480p), HD (720p) and HDX (1080p). The minimum bandwidth required for viewing 3D content remains the same as for 2D content.
