Sites claims glimpses at parts for unreleased iPhone

updated 05:20 pm EST, Wed January 5, 2011

Device could be CDMA or fifth-gen model

Two websites are claiming early access to parts for an unidentified iPhone. The first, SmartPhone Media, has still pictures showing a new frame in comparison with the one for the iPhone 4. While virtually identical, changes have been made to the placement and number of gaps in the antenna band. The new frame is in fact said to have four gaps, whereas the current model only has three.

Although the images are claimed to come from a "very reliable source," it's uncertain whether the frame is for a fifth-generation iPhone or an anticipated Verizon model. It's speculated that redesigned frame could be intended to cope with the iPhone 4's reception problems, or to handle new broadcasting responsibilities, such as LTE. While the Verizon iPhone has been rumored as supporting LTE though, the carrier has relatively little LTE coverage, spanning about 38 cities and 60 airports.

A YouTube video from a site called GlobalDirectParts meanwhile purports to show a variety of pieces for a similarly unknown iPhone. Some of these include the frame, ribbon cables and the middle plating. Beyond the frame the differences are mostly superficial, but could potentially aid with issues like the sturdiness of the phone.

This is an old iPhone 4

Prototype. It is not the iPhone 5 or Verizon phone.

    If it's an iPhone 5....

....it's defiitely the Verizon LTE one. It would need to support LTE, EV-DO, 1x/I-95, WiFi, and Bluetooth....hence the added seam to increase the # of antennas from three to four.

That's my guess, I'm probably wrong though.
