Sharp Galapagos tablets hit the FCC

Set for US launch in early 2011?

Two Sharp Galapagos tablets have hit the FCC. First unveiled in Japan last July and then launched September, the two Android tablets looks to be headed Stateside. Sharp has previously indicated that it planned to release the tablets in the US after its December release in Japan, but has not outlined a timeframe. Their appearance at the FCC is the first evidence that the Sharp plans on bringing the tablets to the US in early 2011.

Where Sharp plans to differentiate the tablets from the slew of Android tablets expected to be unveiled at CES 2011 this week is in the tight integration of the tablets with a Galapagos online e-book store. To facilitate e-reading on the devices, Sharp has equipped the 5.5-inch model with a high-res 1024x600 display and the 10.8-inch model with a high-res 1366x800 display. They support color images and complex book layouts, including XMDF.

In Japan, the devices are built around a Kindle-style automatic subscription download service where new issues are pushed in the background. Although the devices are focused on e-reading, Sharp believe that they can challenge the iPad by being able to work as general purpose media devices as well. [via Wireless Goodness]
