HP dm1 gets AMD Fusion, netbooks get new colors

HP gave a swift boost in performance to its Pavilion dm1 crossover notebook today by giving it AMD's new Fusion processors. The 11.6-inch notebook leaps from the Athlon II Neo to the new 1.6GHz E-350 and should get much faster Radeon HD 6310 graphics along with much better battery performance. HP expects nearly double the runtime at up to 10.75 hours.

The ultralight gets a matching capacity upgrade with 320GB minimum (up from 250GB) and the choice of as much as 750GB of internal space. It now carries 3GB standard and supports extras like GPS mapping and an external Blu-ray drive. HP has planned a quick turnaround and is shipping the dm1 on January 9 for the same starting price of $450.

Netbook buyers get a much more cautious update with two new Mini 210 models. The systems are virtually unchanged from a mid-year upgrade but now have the option of two plaid colors, iceberry and raspberry. The 1.66GHz Atom N455, 1GB of RAM and 160GB hard drive persist, though they give it the same 10.75 hours of battery life as the faster dm1.

Both new Mini 210 colors are due on January 23 for $330.
