App Store could pass 500,000 active titles in 2011
Apple has a high chance of passing the 500,000 app milestone for the App Store based on current data. Having unofficially passed 325,000 active titles as of December 26, the App Store is now seeing 25,421 apps submitted per month, 148Apps said. If every app were approved, Apple could exceed the half-million point in seven months, or near the end of June.
The feat might take longer as various factors are likely to prevent a direct path. App rejections, titles voluntarily pulled from the store and lulls might delay the figure. Apple has usually seen its app rate increase over time and could make up for lost apps through faster growth.
Apple is virtually certain to maintain the largest store by volume in 2011, but it may face competition from Android. Google is known to be nearing 200,000 apps after reaching 100,000 just a few months ago. The growth rate is slower than Apple's but could be accelerated by a wave of Android 2.4 tablets spurring on separate app development.
Most other app portals are still trailing. BlackBerry App World just reached 15,000 titles this fall, and both the Palm App Catalog and Windows Phone Marketplace reached 5,000 titles at the end of this year. [via MobileSyrup]
