PS3 gets near permanent firmware jailbreak

PlayStation 3 firmware unlocks like PS Jailbreak may have a permanent way to circumvent Sony's patching attempts. Hacking team Fail 0verflow used the Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin on Wednesday to show a technique that could not only crack the PS3's loaders but allow for self-signatures to give apps permission to run. They would not only allow hacks that run without needing a USB stick but to quickly update signatures on unofficial code when a Sony patch tries to render the signings invalid.

The update could immediately render Sony's 3.55 firmware susceptible and might make it difficult for the company to sustain a lockdown for more than a matter of hours.

Sony hasn't commented on the new discovery. Jailbreaking didn't occur on the platform until the company removed Linux support from the PS3 with its 3.21 upgrade. The company has routinely claimed that it pulled support due to security reasons, but it's widely believed the primary incentive was to curb piracy. Many earlier piracy attempts used Linux to access the PS3 firmware and app code without the restrictions that would normally be in place. [via PSGroove]
