Olympus XZ-1 and Panasonic compacts tipped for CES

Olympus and Panasonic are planning to launch cameras at CES that could include a very advanced Olympus compact, newly escaped details showed on Wednesday. The XZ-1 would have the same 10-megapixel sensor as Panasonic's LX5 but an even brighter lens, shooting at an f1.8 aperture at its minimum 28mm focus and never going higher than f2.5 at its 112mm maximum range. The lone 4/3 Rumors photo shows a pop-up flash and a hot shoe for an external flash or other add-ons.

Most details weren't given out, but the LX5 can shoot up to ISO 12,800 sensitivity and captures 720p video. Pricing and the final release date are still unknowns but might hover close to the $500 of Panasonic's camera.

Panasonic itself is believed to be kicking off a new camera series starting with the S1 and S3, though these don't have details. Iterations of existing cameras are similarly anticipated, such as the FH2, FH5 and TS3. Panasonic only sometimes gives prices and ship dates, usually reserving any longer term details for later.
