Nook Color root hack adds Kindle app

updated 03:25 pm EST, Wed December 29, 2010

Hack enables Android Market, Kindle store on Nook

A way to get the Kindle books on the Nook Color e-book reader is being detailed on the unofficial BlogKindle site. The hack will let users access both the Amazon and Barnes & Noble bookstores as well as any other app that works in this version of the firmware. The Nook is already an Android device but is told to launch the Nook app by default, never leaving

Getting around this involves rooting the device to enable access to the Android Market. Once this is done, users can installs Kindle and Kobo reader apps. This logically allows installing other apps not related to e-books, including games.

As with most hacks, the trick carries the risk of bricking the Nook Color and voiding its warranty. Official firmware updates from Barnes & Noble also won't work unless it's flashed back to its factory state.

The process is said to have taken the author of the source post five minutes to complete. Some issues, such as not being able to download apps from the market application, were fixed with a reboot. YouTube, remote desktop, Gmail and Angry Birds apps are said to have worked without a hitch, however. The hack is already reversible, and traces of the root can be eliminated by installing the official 1.0.1 update.
