Nintendo: 3DS hazardous for young childrens' eyesight

updated 06:40 am EST, Wed December 29, 2010

Children under 6 should avoid 3D mode

Nintendo Japan has issued a safety warning on its website with regard to the potential dangers of viewing images in 3D mode on its forthcoming 3DS handheld console. In particular, the warning advises young children under the age of 6 to avoid using the device in 3D mode altogether. According to the post, "Vision of children under the age of six has been said [to be in the] developmental stage." As 3D content is delivered stereoscopically with different left and right eye images, the eyesight of children under 6 could be adversely affected as their eyesight is still developing.

The post, which comes ahead of the its launch at CES 2011, suggests that parents set parental controls to restrict young children to viewing content on the 3DS only in 2D. Children under the age of 6 who view the console at CES 2011 will reportedly barred from using the 3DS at the event.

3D games that are planned to be exhibited alongside the 3DS include Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D The Naked Sample, Winning Eleven 3DSoccer, Street Fighter IV 3D Edition and Resident Evil among others.

Nintendo plans to launch the 3DS in Japan on February 26 for the equivalent of $300. [via PC Mag]
