Ubuntu Linux to enter tablet fray with Tenq's P07

updated 01:50 pm EST, Tue December 28, 2010

Tenq P07 may be first Ubuntu tablet

Ubuntu will get its first entry into the same tablet arena filled by Android and iOS with a newly uncovered model. Tenq's P07 is running Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 is more optimized for touch as a result. A 32GB SSD provides the main storage; Ubuntu's light requirements give it an "almost instant" boot time, Giz-China understood.

The system is powered by a netbook-level 1.6GHz Atom chip and 2GB of RAM, but it's likely to run faster than equivalent Windows tablets. Other details such as battery life are unknowns as bugs are reportedly being "worked out" before the P07 is ready to ship.

Launch details haven't been given for Tenq's example, but its use of a free OS could keep the price low compared to most tablets. It may never ship outside of its native China beyond special exports but could carve a niche for pure Linux that hasn't existed in tablets so far.

Why keep it out of america

Probably because the big boys don't want the competition. This would be a smokin hot tablet. Let it come the north America!

    I'm slightly concerned...

...that it'll suffer the same fate of full desktop OSes (I know it's a netbook version, but that's still a full OS, compared to iOS and Android) with mouse input. I've used Linux rather extensively in the past, and I can say from experience it isn't very touch oriented.

Needless to say, if it does jump the oceanic barrier, it'd be very interesting to see how it competes with iOS, the 7 tablet, and Android tablets.

    Via Bootcamp...

I wish Linux could be installed on Intel macs as easily as Windoze.

It's extremely easy to install Linux on Intel macs. You end up losing boot camp which is replaced by Grub, but works great.
