Samsung previews WB700 megazoom, NX11 before CES

Samsung WB700 and NX11 official before CES

Samsung added some more advance news in the run-up to CES today with news of two new upgraded cameras. The WB700 is its centerpiece and is designed with video in mind. Although it can zoom out to a true 18X (24-432mm) in a compact body during HD movie making, it can capture footage silently through a new noise cancellation routine that counteracts lens noise.

The camera takes a cue from Panasonic and can reach out to 24X through a software-based zoom that allegedly minimizes the pixelated look. Samsung has upgraded the sensor from the WB650 to 16 megapixels and still supports semi-pro features like full manual control and RAW.

The NX11 is a more modest upgrade to the NX10 that centers on its accommodation for lenses. It now supports the same i-Function enhanced lenses as the NX100 and thus can set a lens priority mode that tunes settings to what's best for the lens. Its grip has also been improved, though the APS-C sized sensor, RAW shooting, 720p video and three-inch AMOLED are similar to the NX10.

Samsung ships the NX11 first for an unknown price, though in the US it should be close to the $700 asked for the current model. The WB700 arrives in April and has only British pricing so far, at about 249 ($383) with tax already included. Two i-Function aware lenses are accompanying the NX11 and will bring both a 20mm pancake lens and a 20-50mm standard zoom.

Pictures and other details should be coming by Samsung's CES event on January 5. [both via Pocket-Lint]

MegaZoom? A 3 year old Panasonic FZ-18 goes from 24-502.

Can we stop putting 18X 10X, etc on a camera? It makes much more sense to people when you put the equivalent 35mm zoom range (i.e. 24-502). I don't care if you do the math and tell me it goes 18x it's lower mm setting. I can divide. And I'll be impressed when they put on a Leica-like lens on it like Panasonic.
