Radio Shack revives iPhone 4 sale with no end date in sight

Radio Shack restarts iPhone 4 sale, trade-ins

Radio Shack this evening said that its recent and rare iPhone sale was restarting again on Wednesday. The carrier will sell both the 16GB iPhone 4 and the 8GB iPhone 3GS for $50 off when mated either to a new contract or a qualifying renewal. Trade-in values also stack on top of the discount and will give back either $75 for an iPhone 3G or $125 for an iPhone 3GS, resulting in as little as an $24 outlay for those trading up from last year's model.

Unusually, the sale details given to BGR have no fixed end point and will continue "while supplies last." The only condition is that the phone be fully functional without broken parts, the retailer said.

The extension was credited to the success of the earlier week-long sale. Radio Shack wouldn't give specifics but credited its moving a "record setting number of phones" as a core reason.

Apple and AT&T have normally denied retailers the flexibility to discount the iPhone by more than a few dollars but this fall suddenly appeared to have changed their stances. Radio Shack, Walmart and its sister store Sam's Club have been offering either direct discounts or heavy bonuses on the devices as long as customers are on contract or renewing. It's speculated that Apple has turned to using price to help fight off Android phones and that AT&T wants to lock as many iPhone customers as possible into two-year contracts before the Verizon iPhone arrives and encourages some to switch.

    Trade-in rippoff

Considering that last year's model easily fetches $300 on e-Bay (even 3G gets at least $200), I would never consider donating all that money to Radio Shack.

AT&T trying to lock in those last iPhone customers before they lose exclusivity... I hope.
