Netflix engaged in negotiations to expand farther
Netflix, which provides streaming video services in the US and Canada as well as DVD rentals by mail in the US, is looking to expand into other countries as well, sources for AdWeek said. The company is reportedly in talks with advertising and media agencies. Netflix has its sights set on Europe, Latin America and Asia, company CEO Reed Hastings has said on the record in an earlier interview.
Before this happens, however, Netflix wants to ensure its recently launched Canadian operation is set. The unnamed sources confirmed talks are ongoing, but did not specifically name them. One source close to the talks said these are "exploratory conversations."
If or how this will affect US assignments hasn't been revealed.
In 2004, Netflix ceased a planned UK expansion in order to focus on its US plans. It entered the Canadian market this fall, and was originally founded in the US in 1997. Before it enters new markets, Netflix needs to secure streaming rights for its offerings from various content owners.
