iPhone production up to 21m in Q1 with Verizon rolled in?

updated 07:40 am EST, Mon December 27, 2010

iPhone Q1 production at 21m with CDMA factored in

Apple is optimistic for not just its Verizon iPhone plans in early 2011 but for its regular GSM iPhones as well, part suppliers claimed on Monday. The company reportedly plans to ship five to six million CDMA iPhones between January and March, but has also increased its production of regular iPhones from 13 million to 15 million, giving it as much as 21 million shipments. The CDMA version also wouldn't be exclusive to Verizon as Digitimes has put it shipping in the US and Asia-Pacific.

The countries and carriers weren't named, but China Telecom, Japan's KDDI Au and Korea's SK Telecom are all possible and may justify a SIM slot even if the device is CDMA-only.

Foxconn should produce both editions, while ASUS' former manufacturing wing Pegatron will shoulder some of the CDMA workload, the Taiwan-area sources reiterated.

The new figures combined with estimated fall results would give Apple two consecutive quarters of record iPhone shipments and trump even last year's success, where Apple increased its sales in the winter where most other companies face a post-holiday slump. It's estimated to ship 15.5 million iPhones in the fall, an almost 10 percent boost over the summer, and would get a 35 percent spike over that higher number the moment CDMA was available.

Both numbers would help Apple pull away from the second and likely third consecutive quarters in a row. RIM shipped 14.2 million BlackBerrys in the fall and will very likely be beaten if the production numbers are accurate. The iPhone could also get its first truly wide lead in the winter and might provide a bigger challenge to Android and Symbian.

    Bring it on!

My current Blackberry on Verizon contract is up August 2011 so an iPhone on Verizon in 2011 will be great timing for me.
