New redsn0w beta does untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak

updated 09:40 am EST, Mon December 27, 2010

Early code saddled with several restrictions

The unofficial iPhone Dev Team has posted a new beta of redsn0w, its jailbreaking utility for iOS devices. The release supports untethered operation in iOS 4.2.1, that is, jailbreaking without having to stay connected to a computer via USB during the process. So far only the iPad, the iPhone 4 and the fourth-generation iPod touch are compatible.

The Dev Team warns that because things can potentially go "very wrong," the software is aimed strictly at beta testers. People are asked to back up any essential content, and avoid the beta entirely if they use the ultrasn0w unlock. The software also requires a separate install of usbmuxd, and that Cydia have v4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved.

Owing to sandbox problems, Bluetooth support is temporarily unavailable. redsn0w 0.9.7b3 is a Mac-only download; the untethered mode can be used by selecting the Jailbreak Monte option. Testers are urged to do a fresh restore before installation in order to rule out variables.

    still

is untethered really that important? How many times does one have to 'jailbreak' their iPhone if they can't be bothered with plugging it into their computer for a few minutes?

    define "tethered"

I'm not certain that there is a well-accepted definition of "untethered" and "tethered."

I always understood it to mean that every time the device is restarted or powered down, that the jailbreak is lost if the jailbreak is "tethered." Meaning that you have to re-jailbreak each and every time, even if your battery just runs out of juice and shuts down. The previous jailbreaks were untethered.

However, some are thinking that "untethered" means that you don't have to physically connect to a computer to jailbreak, such as the jailbreakme.com exploit. But remember that jailbreaks were being referred to as "untethered" long since the first iPhone exploit, and required connection with a cable.

So, to recap, an untethered jailbreak does NOT mean that you don't have to connect the phone to a computer to jailbreak the device.
