Skype explains outage as supernode connection problem

updated 02:20 pm EST, Wed December 22, 2010

Skype outage starts up worldwide

Skype on Wednesday confirmed that it was facing a rare outage and provided a brief explanation. VoIP callers are either unable to sign in or else are being knocked off the network as they can't connect to the "supernodes" needed for calls. Certain versions of Skype can't see the nodes and thus have a hard time making or sustaining a connection, the company said.

Engineers are already working to implement a fix that would create "mega-supernodes" that handle an unusually large number of connections. Skype hasn't given out a firm estimate for when it expected the service to return to normal but estimated that it would be in place within a few hours. Video chat and other features beyond voice might take longer to come back up.

Skype has typically been held up as the largest VoIP provider in part for the reliability and isn't known to have had a significant outage in recent memory.

    "In recent memory..."

What about a few years ago, when Skype was offline for all Windows users because they couldn't get their P2P system to function properly?

    From Skype's Wikipedia article:

"On Thursday 16 August 2007 and for about two days, Skype became unavailable to a majority of its users. Millions of users at the same time were requesting to log-in following a routine Windows update and this flooded the peer-to-peer system."
