Dell Streak gets price cut in US

Dell has quietly instituted a large price cut on the Streak in the US to fuel sales. The unlocked versions have been slashed by $180 to reach $400. Versions of the Android tablet tied to AT&T still have similar prices at $550 and $650 for their respective 16GB and 32GB of storage.

The company didn't explain the reason for the steep drop. Its timing was nonetheless unusual and happened just four months after the US launch and applied only to the devices which didn't have a carrier deal. Dell may be clearing stock in anticipation of its seven-inch Looking Glass tablet, which could displace the Streak.

Historically, companies have usually cut prices sharply on devices when sales are slow and the cost of manufacturing is low enough to avoid taking a loss. Dell has never disclosed its Streak sales figures but is facing stiff competition not just from the iPad but from other Android tablets, particularly the Galaxy Tab. At $580, the Streak was near-identical in price but had a larger, higher resolution screen as well as more storage and faster hardware.

    Try giving them away

Maybe that'd be the way to gain some market share.

It's Just Dell's Brand New Marketing Strategy!

They thought they'd get a jump on the after-Christmas sales by having them before Christmas.

Probably got the idea from Ballmer.

    deeply-flaws UI

Each icon could have been designed without the gaudy black/grey background, which occupies more than 60% of total viewable area of the button—as if the screen is not small enough already.

Sounds just like the MS failed KIN before it's discontinued.

Dell Streak ships with Android 1.6

The Dell Streak was a nicely spec'd phone (aka tablet) that shipped with Android 1.6.

Nowadays you can get an OTA upgrade to 2.2, at long last - but it still ships with Android 1.6.

At $399 this is a nicely spec'd largish phone.

It could've sold well, but it was Dell and AT&T - they muxed the marketing/momentum for this thing.

I don't blame Android - c'mon Android was surging, large phones selling like hot cakes - tablet interest surging - this was a classic marketing blunder, and an inability to keep up with the latest releases of Android, while other companies didn't have that same problem.

Because Apple has shown the way you're supposed to sell product is set a price and never change it, regardless of component prices or other costs.
