Instagram hits one million users, plans Android expansion

updated 07:30 pm EST, Tue December 21, 2010

More funding will fuel API and Android development

The popular photo-styling and sharing iOS app Instagram now has over one million registered users only three months after its debut, according to a post on the company's blog. The free app lets users take pictures with their device's built-in camera, style them using retro-flavored filters and upload them to popular social services. The company believes that this is "only the beginning" and has plans for a more expansive web site, more funding and an Android version of the app planned for 2011, according to an interview with TechCrunch.

By comparison, it took Foursquare just over a year to reach a million users, and Twitter about two years. The company has moved into proper offices and scaled to meet demand from users like Apple's Phil Schiller. Co-founder Kevin Systrom tells TechCrunch that their next goal is an application programming interface (API) to make available to other services and developers. Following that, they'd like to expand their web site to be a more "engaging" experience.

To that end, the company is in talks with venture capital groups to secure more funding while it searches for a profit model. Also in development -- but with no firm timetable -- is a version of the app for the Android platform. [via TechCrunch]
