Apple hammers on FaceTime with new iPhone 4 TV ad

updated 09:10 am EST, Tue December 21, 2010

Christmas ad debuts with less than week left

Apple has begun airing a new TV ad for the iPhone 4, dubbed "Under the Covers." The spot once again concentrates on FaceTime video calls, this time with a father pretending to be Santa Claus in a conversation with his son. The ad is airing unusually close to Christmas, with only a few days of potential Christmas shopping left.

FaceTime has been a regular theme in ads for the iPhone 4. Video calling remains a relatively rare feature on North American phones, and the iPhone 4 was the first iPhone model to include a forward-facing camera. Apple has since expanded the concept to the Mac and fourth-generation iPod touch, and appears poised to do the same with the second-generation iPad.

    shame on them

Apple shouldn't be encouraging identity theft/fraud of this nature. I hope the real Santa Claus takes them to the cleaners for this.

    Apple just doesn't get it

Until they make facetime over 3G a reality and available on more platforms it'll never take off. Losing the stupid Facetime name wouldn't hurt either.

This ad aint about selling a few iPhones before Ch

Its about associating good feelings with the iPhone. That will go far beyond Christmas.

    "Apple just doesn't get it"

Is that why their products are so unpopular? You tell 'em! Ha!

I'm guessing FaceTime over 3G would blow up AT&T's network and work terribly, and everyone would complain and be unhappy with it. Bet hey, at least they would "get it".... right?

That ad sure had some beautiful audio

by Nat King Cole. The ad itself is rather hokey, but I guess it gets the point across. I still wonder how much FaceTime is going to be used, but certainly the more FaceTime-ready devices there are, the more chances of it getting used.

Did someone say that a father masquerading as Santa Claus is creepy? If I was that kid's age and had a personal video line to Santa Claus, I would have been jumping for glee. Bring me those toys, fat man in red.

    I like FaceTime

It works beautifully for my girlfriend and I who live 175 miles apart. I got her the new iPod Touch so we could use this; but she was doubtful at first as to whether it could perform and then if it were worth using regularly.

She's highly convinced now and can't stop bragging to her friends about it...and she declares it to be one of the main reasons for the durability of our relationship. We will "chat" for hours each day on it; it's how we stay in touch w/ each other's typical week. If word of mouth is the best advertisement, then she'll be responsible for at least a dozen sales of iPhones or iPod Touches due to FaceTime (FYI...she barely uses it for anything else!!)

So yes...those commercials do illustrate real-life experiences with the FaceTime feature.

So, your entire relationship would have fallen apart if she couldn't see you on a screen? Wow, wonder what will be the cause of its demise then.

    Yawn

I still don't know anyone who FaceTimes or video chats. Why anyone feels the need to be seen when talking is beyond me. The only good thing about the phone is that you can use it while doing other things. It's like TV vs. Radio. If you watch TV, you actually have to pay it specific attention. If you listen to the radio/audio, you can go about your business, be it in the office or around the house.

The only people I can think would want to video talk are those high-maintenance types or want to make sure you're giving them your complete and undivided attention.
