Microsoft to bump up accuracy of Kinect fourfold?
Microsoft engineers are developing a software update for the Kinect Xbox 360 peripheral that will improve its accuracy fourfold, according to Eurogamer. This added resolution would allow it to track finger movement and hand rotation. Either switching or compression technology should send more information to the console through Kinect and thus give it more precision.
The added bandwidth may be accomplished by a simple software update. This same software limits the Kinect's camera at 30 frames per second at a resolution of 320x240. Bumping the resolution to 640x480 could quadruple the accuracy that could read fingers. The bottleneck is the USB interface, however, with its throughput topping out at 35MBps, though it currently only uses between 15MBps and 16MBps. The input is shared with other USB devices and thus usually has to be limited to avoid limiting other hardware.
Kinect requires about 20MBps of throughput to get full resolution from the cameras. Some have believed Microsoft could free up the required bandwidth by lowering the throughput of game installs from USB flash drives. What remains unknown is the Kinect camera sensor's resolution. Processing four times as many pixels would slow down general processing duties, however.
