Galaxy S outruns iPhone to two million mark in Korea

updated 12:05 pm EST, Mon December 20, 2010

Galaxy S hits 2m in Korea as iPhone makes 1.8m

Samsung late on Sunday claimed the distinction of outpacing Apple to two million sales of a given smartphone model in Korea. The native firm sold two million Galaxy S phones in the six months since launch, beating the iPhone's 1.8 million since it went on sale over a year ago. The rate was a slight slowdown from the summer, when Samsung sold 800,000 phones in two months.

The company also said it expected to reach a milestone for Android as a whole by making the Galaxy S the bestselling single Android device of all time. It has already sold 9.3 million of the flagship worldwide as of this past Friday and remains on track to reach the 10 million mark in the last two weeks of 2010.

Reasons weren't given for the quick change of ranks, but Samsung had the advantage of catering to a home country that has traditionally been averse to buying foreign phones. Most sales in Korea are dominated either by Samsung or LG, with smaller local firms like Pantech also getting a larger than usual share. The iPhone is thought to have catalyzed Samsung after years of relatively little attention paid to its smartphone line, whose emphasis on Windows Mobile let Apple catch up in sales until it switched to Android.

Samsung's deep influence may have also let it punish KT for the iPhone by giving it reduced marketing support, although this isn't thought to have had much effect as the iPhone 4 saw large pre-order levels despite shipping only on one carrier, removing the dependence on the Galaxy S, Omnia or other phones.

Apple is mostly limited in the country by the lack of a CDMA iPhone to run on SK Telecom, but the presumed CDMA iPhone launch next year could change the dynamic. [via Chosun Ilbo]

    Shocking

that "home field advantage" holds true in Korea. NOT. They're almost as protective of their turf as China.

After looking at the picture, I thought it was a chinese iPhone knock-off. The form factor is pretty identical.

Perhaps Samsung sold a million of those phones to... Samsung!

    Galaxy s vs iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 4 went on sale in Korea in August. They are comparing iPhone 3GS to Galaxy S, may be they should keep their mouths shut until the iPhone 4 hits the six month mark.

    Maybe they pulled a Microsoft

and gave one to each of their employees and counted these as sales. ;-)

Not surprised it is selling well.....

it has a US designed OS running on top of a copy of a US designed hardware form factor. I guess all their other phones are selling pretty badly cause their design is not based on a market leader. Problem is is that all the value they are offering (except for being homegrown) is developed or owned by someone else so eventually their sales will start to drop.
