Roku CEO credits sales boost to new Apple TV

updated 04:10 pm EST, Mon December 20, 2010

Apple set-top helped draw attention, says Wood

The release of the second-generation Apple TV actually spurred sales of Roku media set-tops, says Roku's CEO, Anthony Wood. The executive claims that Roku sales in fact doubled when the new Apple TV shipped in late September, despite Apple being a heavyweight capable of marginalizing competition. Apple's involvement is said to have drawn attention to Roku's products, which can offer some advantages like 1080p content and/or support for Hulu Plus.

Wood remarks that Roku will probably have sold its millionth set-top by the end of the year, also cracking $50 million in revenue. 2010 revenues are predicted to double to $100 million. The CEO mentions that Amazon is a significant factor in Roku sales, contributing about 25 percent.

At present the Roku XD is 9th on Amazon's list of bestselling electronics, while the XDS is 11th, and the HD is 42nd. The Apple TV, by contrast, is 23rd. Apple's positioning is still better than that of Logitech, whose Revue set-top is at 110th, and Boxee, whose more expensive Box is ranked 171st.

    Price drop didn't hurt either

Maybe dropping your prices by $40 or more helped? Why do these CEOs think we're so stupid? Roku dropped their prices when they got word of Apple's new price point. That's what spurred sales.

    I preferred the Roku...

...for a number of reasons but the Apple TV did inspire me to consider a streaming box. I felt that the Roku had the features that I wanted. I don't get my video content from iTunes and I wanted Hulu Plus and Amazon On Demand. As soon as Apple adds more content, I'll buy one.

    Apple just burst Roku's Bubble

So Apple announced today that the'll have sold 1 Mil. ATV's after just a few months. Roku will have sold 1 Mil after a few years. So much for Mr.Wood's brilliant statements.
