Foursquare hints at photo sharing, iPhone revamp due soon

updated 05:05 pm EST, Fri December 17, 2010

Foursquare revamp may bring photo sharing

Foursquare mentioned late Thursday that a significant new version of its self-titled app had been approved for the App Store. The company didn't say what features it would bring but expected the update to arrive early next week. Founders Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai have both been leaving clues that it would have major features as part of a "hot new app."

The feature is most likely to include photo sharing attached to locations, based on a leak allegedly from within Foursquare testing. The lone screenshot sent to Mashable shows a photos section and has implied that users will soon have the option of checking in with a photo and seeing photos associated with a location. Third-party apps like Instagram already permit checking into Foursquare while taking photos, but the images are kept separate outside of the app.

Recommendations for other areas to visit could come now that a beta programming interface is available.

Updates for Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7 and other platforms are likely to get updates in time, but Foursquare has traditionally focused on the iPhone first. [via VentureBeat]
